Weather Alert Issued for Utah Roads as Wintry Mix Prompts Hazardous Driving Conditions

A cocktail of wintry weather has doused Utah with rain and snow, prompting the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) to issue a weather alert for hazardous driving conditions. “Wet roads whether from rain throughout the Salt Lake valley or snow up in the canyons,” were reported by

, forecasting a slippery Tuesday morning commute for Utahns. Most major thoroughfares, including a stretch of I-15, are expected to be slick as road temperatures drop.

To preemptively manage the traffic impact, UDOT warned that lower elevations are likely to “easily run wet,” and specifically mentioned areas such as Parley’s Canyon to the Wyoming border and Big Cottonwood Canyon, according to

. Higher elevations were forecast to receive a few inches of snow, with Cottonwood canyons potentially to receive more accumulation in mid-canyon areas than the peaks.

The slippery conditions extended to other routes as well, with UDOT issuing alerts until 3 p.m. for several canyons and summits. These include I-70 Clear Creek and Salina Summits, Daniels Canyon, and Soldier Summit, as

reported. Traction laws are also in effect in the canyons to help manage the snow and slush hazards, which are part of the state’s response to ensure driver safety during these challenging conditions.

Meanwhile, UDOT is closely monitoring the state’s southern routes, with potential brief snow and slush expected for portions of I-15 in the Cove Fort area and parts of I-70, until roughly 3 p.m. These areas are being watched closely as the cold front moves through, bringing changes in elevation and temperature that could impact road conditions unpredictably.
