West Michigan Unites for 21st Annual Turkey Drop to Combat Food Insecurity

In an effort to gather 5,000 frozen turkeys for underprivileged families this Thanksgiving, Mel Trotter Ministries is getting ready to hold its 21st annual Turkey Drop event in West Michigan. Donations can be given at several places during the event, which aims to solve food insecurity.

In order to increase their outreach, the group has teamed up with the Muskegon Rescue Mission and Gateway Mission, according to FOX 17. This year’s drop-off locations include two Celebration. The event will take place today from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at movie theaters, Mel Trotter Ministries in Grand Rapids, their Jenison Thrift Store, and locations in Muskegon and Holland.

“Food is about twice the price as it was a few years ago, so a Thanksgiving meal is just incredibly expensive,” said Pam Liggett, director of development at Mel Trotter Ministries, in a statement that was reported by WZZM 13. This statement acknowledged the increasing financial burden on families who are trying to enjoy the annual celebration.

According to an interview obtained by WGVU News, Feeding America West Michigan plays a critical role in helping to mitigate the effects of inflation and rising housing costs by providing storage and transportation for the turkeys. This partnership undoubtedly increases Mel Trotter’s ability to serve the community; Pam Liggett also added, “The need is greater than ever,” emphasizing the substantial demand for assistance within the shelter and the larger community she serves.

Nevertheless, Mel Trotter Ministries has an online platform where people can donate money even if they are unable to physically deliver a turkey. Every $20 donated means that one less family will go without a turkey this Thanksgiving.
