White Settlement Launches Holiday Grease Roundup to Combat Sewer Clogs and Recycle Cooking Waste into Energy

Traditionally, this time of year puts a strain on our streets and sewers, but White Settlement Community Services is proactively addressing this slick problem.

White Settlement Community Services recently spread the word on social media about the negative consequences of dumping grease down the drain. They stated, “They can stick to the insides of pipes and, over time, turn into hard clogs that can lead to messy sewer backups.” The post continued by outlining the unpleasant consequences of such obstructions, such as “serious overflow issues in our streets and streams,” a situation that resonates with anybody who fears traffic bottlenecks and road closures because of unplanned repairs.

The goal of the Holiday Grease Roundup is to recycle these oily remnants into something much more useful. The Wastewater And Treatment Education Roundtable, American BioSource, and the North Central Texas Council of Governments are collaborating on this project, which began last Wednesday and will end on January 12.

“The used cooking oil and grease collected will be turned into biodiesel or biogas!” explains White Settlement Community Services. The program provides two benefits by utilizing this waste product: it reduces landfill contributions and produces clean electricity. In addition to serving as a call to action for the White Settlement community, this project serves as a model for how realistic recycling initiatives can open the door to sustainable living.
