Willis, Walker lead Detroit King in rout of Douglass, avenge last year’s PSL semifinal loss

Detroit – The last time Detroit King and Detroit Douglass played was in the PSL semi-finals a little over a year ago, Douglass defeated King by 30 points.

Fans must remember, however, that King played without standout point guard Chansey Willis, who was out with an injury.

King's Davine Walker fired a shot against Douglass' Jahi Gibson in the first half.

Well, Willis is back and definitely healthy. He scored eight points, including a pair of 3-point points during a 12-0 opening run, and King – 5-1 and 8th in The News Super 20 – defeated 16th place Douglass (6-2) and the top player of the state, Michigan State-bound 6-foot-6 guard Pierre Brooks, 69-51, Friday afternoon in Douglass.

“Last year when I was injured when we were at Cass Tech (for the PSL semi-finals), Omar (Zeigler) was playing but he wasn’t 100 percent and after they beat us they jumped up and screamed and that played just in my head over and over and over, ”said Willis, who finished with 23 points (10 out of 20 shots) and seven assists, including eight direct points, to give him a 50-30 lead with three minutes remaining in the third quarter open.

“The first four minutes (the second half) were crucial and we all have a good group, that was good for us.”

While Willis was definitely a key to the win, it was King 6-2 senior guard Davin Walker that turned out to be the difference, and he did it on the defensive.

Walker, giving Brooks four inches and nearly 40 pounds, made Brooks struggle for every inch of the floor, making him uncomfortable by using his stellar speed and jumping ability.

King made an 11-2 run to end the first half and take a 31:19 lead after Douglass pulled Brooks’ 25-foot-toe at 3:20 in the second within 20:17.

Brooks had 12 points in the first half, but on 4-of-16 (1-of-7 3s) and King, who was laying a few layups of steals in his press in the last minute, cut Douglass to 6-of -23 shooting through the first two quarters.

“You just have to have the mindset that you can review anyone and play with anyone in the world,” said Walker of Brooks. “He’s a great player but you have to try to get inside his head and stop him early and not get him going because when he gets going you know it’s going to be a long night for you.

“We were talking in the locker room about coming out with a lot of energy and playing hard. That’s why we wanted to take their hearts out and that is exactly what we did.”

King’s 6-4 Omar Zeigler, one of the state’s top seniors, returned this week from a telescopic knee injury with eight points and seven rebounds. This shows he’s healthy by blowing past 6-10 Javantae Randle and getting a layup with 3: 20 left for a 67-47 lead.

Lamont Parks, a Detroit Western transfer, scored 15 for King and made 5 of 8 shots, including two 3-pointers, and Senior Guard Gelil Ward, 12 points, also made two 3-pointers.

Brooks ended up with 36 points and 12 rebounds, making 14 of 30 shots (3 of 12 3s), including 10 to 14 shots in the second half, highlighted by a 3-pointer from the last half place as the time ran out was the third quarter.

Randle finished with 11 points and nine rebounds.
