Wisconsin Father Goes Missing on Business Trip in Illinois, New Berlin Family and Authorities Seek Answers

A Wisconsin family is grappled with uncertainty as Ben Oberto, a 45-year-old father of two from New Berlin, inexplicably vanished while on a business trip in Illinois. According toFOX6 News, Oberto was last seen on Wednesday evening after he left 1776 Restaurant in Crystal Lake, Illinois, and was heading towards his car. Oberto’s wife, Laura Leatherberry, recalled the ominous feeling when her husband’s phone went straight to voicemail that same night.

Leatherberry last spoke with Oberto around 6 p.m., expecting him to return home within a couple of hours. Filled with concern after failing to reach him later that evening, Leatherberry said, “I just knew something was off,” as reported byFOX6 News. Oberto’s regular commute was disrupted as his vehicle was last tracked using an I-PASS at a toll in Elgin, while his cell phone’s last known location was in Rosemont, according to surveillance.

In a heart-wrenching turn of events detailed byCBS 58, the couple’s young son inquired about heaven the night before his father’s disappearance. Leatherberry recounted the chilling memory, saying, “And now I’m in a situation where I might have to tell him that his Daddy went to heaven. Like, two days later. He’s three.”

Extensive efforts to track Oberto’s last movements have been fruitless so far. Leatherberry and her support network have been working to exhaustively check bank and phone records. “I will take something as far as I can and hand it over to police and ask them to take it to the finish line,” Leatherberry toldCBS 58. Despite checking various transportation hubs, businesses, and emergency services, police have not yet been able to locate Oberto or his vehicle.

Reporting on the family’s ordeal,WISN 12 Newsshared that Leatherberry said, “It’s not like him. He’s never done that. He wasn’t home on time and he wasn’t answering the phone, and I got scared.” With the investigation ongoing, anyone with information is urged to reach out to New Berlin Police Department at 262-782-6640.
