Woman Arrested and Charged with First-Degree Murder for 2023 South Memphis Shooting

More than a year after a deadly shooting at an apartment in South Memphis, a woman has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder and particularly aggravated robbery. According to Local Memphis, on October 28, 2023, the Memphis Police Department (MPD) received a call at the 1700 block of Lapaloma Street and discovered a man who had been shot numerous times and was dead.

Before being apprehended on November 20, the suspect, Jamesha Banzant, 34, popularly known as “Neecy,” had escaped capture. According to FOX13 Memphis, investigators assembled evidence that led to this arrest, including the finding of Banzant’s blue 1998 Ford Mustang left in Southaven the day after the murder. Witnesses described how two guys assisting a woman in moving out of her flat got into a fight before the shooting began. Although the argument ended amicably, tensions increased once more after Moore and a male neighbor ran into Banzant, which is said to have resulted in the shooting.

Banzant entered a not guilty plea when she appeared in court on Thursday. “You are presumed to have filed a not guilty plea in this matter. According to WREG News Channel 3, Judge Louis Montesi, Jr. said, “You do have the right to have an attorney represent you.” Banzant was ordered to remain in jail without release after entering a not-guilty plea; she is scheduled to return to court on Friday morning for a bail review. Banzant also appointed a public lawyer to represent her.

Shortly before he was shot, Montreal Moore, the victim, was observed arguing with Banzant. A lady who claimed to have heard the dispute and the shooting told police that one witness said Moore said, “You better get your girl,” just before the gunfire. Before multiple rounds were fired and Moore passed out from gunshot wounds, “Neecy” was seen brandishing her right arm while it was wrapped in a yellow sheet. According to comments made to WREG News Channel 3, Banzant allegedly took two cell phones after the incident and told the witness, “Auntie you didn’t see nothing,” before he and the male neighbor fled the scene.
