Woman Hospitalized Following Shooting at Senior Living High-Rise in East Memphis, Suspect Detained

According to the Memphis Police Department, a woman was hospitalized yesterday evening following a shooting incident at Serenity Towers in East Memphis. Around 9:45 p.m., police were called to the senior living complex at 400 South Highland Street and discovered a woman who had been shot. She was brought to Regional One Health and is expected to recover despite the horrific experience, according to FOX13 Memphis.

One suspect has been arrested in relation to the shooting, according to the police, but there are still few facts available about the incident’s circumstances because the investigation is still underway. According to WREG News Channel 3, no other details regarding the possible culprit or their motivations were given. The incident took place at the same time that the building’s owner was recently ordered by the city to pay for elevator damages that restricted the freedom and mobility of its occupants, a group that is already at risk due to age and illness.

To make matters worse for the residents, Serenity Towers’ management, Millennia Housing Management, has been embroiled in a financial dispute with the City of Memphis, which was sparked by a power outage that left all elevators inoperable, thereby leaving many elderly and disabled residents stranded. Given the owner’s inactivity, Environmental Court Judge Patrick Dandridge said the city had to pay for the initial repairs. “I think the community at Serenity is thankful that the elevators are working considering the conditions,” he said. Simply put, the court is not satisfied with what the actor has not done. According to a comment taken from Action News 5, “I will thus order the ten days, and you can work with the city with that.”

“Serenity is still responsible, Millennia is still responsible until an agreement is reached,” Judge Dandridge stated in a courtroom exchange reported by Action News 5 despite Millennia’s lawyer arguing that she lacked the funds to pay back these costs. As Millennia’s lawyers are scheduled to appear in court again next week, developments are anticipated.
