DDN – A wrong-way incident on the Florida Turnpike in Broward early Thursday killed one driver and wounded another, closing numerous lanes for several hours.
The crash occurred in the northbound lanes of the Turnpike just after Red Road and was initially reported around 1:45 a.m.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 55-year-old woman was driving a 2010 grey Honda Element SUV in the incorrect direction on the Turnpike’s inside lane.
The driver of a 2016 Honda Civic, a 23-year-old guy, was unable to avoid a collision, and the two vehicles collided head-on, officials said.
The Element then struck a concrete barrier wall and overturned, while the Civic spun around.
The 23-year-old guy, a Cutler Bay resident, died, while the woman, a Hialeah resident, had “incapacitating injuries,” officials said. Their names have not been disclosed.
Aerial photographs showed a car on its side and another that appeared crushed on the driver’s side, with damaged windows. Authorities seemed to cover a body with a tarp and then erect a blue barrier.
The incident stopped all lanes of the Turnpike between Red Road and University Drive. Drivers were forced off onto Red Road.
