Wrong-Way Driver Causes Fatal Crash on I-295: Jacksonville Man Arrested

DDN: According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, Rodney Wesley was taken into custody for causing the collision on I-295 North on February 4 that claimed one life and injured two more.

The circumstances surrounding the collision and Wesley’s capture are detailed in the JSO arrest reports.

The arrest report states that on February 3, officers were called to a reported stolen vehicle on Somerton Court. The following day, police investigated the incident.

“His neighbor’s daughter knew who had stolen the vehicle and had seen him with the vehicle earlier in the day,” the owner of the stolen Lexus told police.

That same day, the automobile was discovered abandoned on Buttercup Street.

Officers responded to an armed carjacking at the ARCO gas station on 103rd Street at approximately 4:31 p.m. A pickup truck was stolen by the suspect, who was subsequently identified as Wesley.

Officers eventually reached the scene of the fatal I-295 crash at approximately 9 p.m. The arrest report states that the pickup truck was discovered in the middle of the road. Both inside and outside the vehicle, a considerable amount of blood was discovered.

Additionally discovered within the truck was the suspect’s backpack. They also discovered a broken gun.

The guy allegedly drove the pickup truck on I-295 North in the opposite direction, according to a Florida Highway Patrol complaint. 

A biker was sent into the road after the driver struck him. 

The rider was then struck by another car. At the scene, the 66-year-old Jacksonville motorcycle rider was declared deceased. Two more received minor medical attention.

Before fleeing the scene on the outside of a semi-tractor trailer, the suspect reportedly got out of the truck and attempted to steal another vehicle, according to FHP.

One officer who witnessed the collision stated that if he saw the suspect again, he would be able to identify the pickup truck driver, according to the JSO arrest report. 

The officer was handed a photo of Wesley on February 5. The officer verified that the individual in the photo was the one who got out of the pickup truck following the collision.

Due to active warrants, officers were actively searching for Wesley on February 6. On Susie Street, JSO discovered the suspect riding a bicycle. Wesley fled on foot when they attempted to reach him.

On Osteen Street, he was discovered hiding behind a shed. The arrest report states that the suspect was apprehended using a JSO K9.

Wesley faces charges of carjacking (armed with a weapon), vehicular homicide, and fleeing the scene of a fatal collision. attempted carjacking, vehicle theft, petit theft, resisting an officer without causing harm to oneself, and having a firearm in the possession of a convicted felon.

He has a $2,580,024 bond and is presently being held at the Duval County Jail.
