WSDOT Completes 2024 I-90 Upgrades as Snoqualmie Pass East Project Advances

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has finished another year of work on the Interstate 90 Snoqualmie Pass East project, which spans from Easton to Vantage. The project, ongoing for fifteen years, aims to improve 15 miles of I-90 and has reached the third phase, focusing near Easton. This year, progress included the construction of sixteen retaining walls, filling 571,329 cubic yards of embankment for eastbound lanes, and completing seventeen rock blasting missions that cleared 403,536 cubic yards of debris.

According to the

Washington State Department of Transportation website

, infrastructure upgrades also included more than forty culverts for stormwater drainage and safe animal crossings. Five undercrossings and one overcrossing are under construction to improve wildlife safety. In September, all lanes near Easton were shifted north to prepare for winter operations, ensuring smooth travel for drivers.

In South Cle Elum, two bridges were completed, improving traffic flow. The I-90 Vantage Bridge also underwent repairs, with a platform built to allow workers to address its underside. So far, 80% of the bridge pier repairs and the replacement of 60 concrete panels have been completed, with the project now a quarter of the way through.

In 2025, work will continue on Phase 3 of the project near Easton, with traffic expected to shift to a new alignment within two to three years. Travelers passing through Vantage in the spring should prepare for delays as the bridge deck is replaced. Both Phase 3 and the Vantage Bridge repairs are on track to be completed by 2028.
