Wyoming Breaks Ground on Godwin Mercado to Revitalize Former GM Site with New Community Hub

On Tuesday, the City of Wyoming started building the Godwin Mercado, a new marketplace that will be situated at 301 36th Street, near to the old General Motors stamping facility. The Godwin Mercado is intended to be a community venue for activities like farmers markets, artisan meetings, and private events like graduation celebrations, according to FOX 17.

It is anticipated that the 6,000-square-foot, $6 million makeover will reinvigorate the city center by establishing a pedestrian-friendly atmosphere. This anticipation was emphasized to WOODTV by City Manager John Shay, who said, “This is just going to provide that catalyst and the momentum to achieve that vision.” Concurrent with the building, Corewell Health and their partners are working to turn nearby lots into commercial districts that will support the local economy by creating well-paying jobs.

According to MLive, the marketplace is an investment that is financed by both public and private sources, such as grants and real estate sales. The marketplace, which is scheduled to be completed in August 2025 and open in the spring of 2026, will have both indoor and outdoor spaces for a range of community-focused activities. According to Krashawn Martin, the city’s parks and recreation director, the community has a strong need for these kinds of multipurpose areas.

There was some discussion among the municipal council members regarding the choice to name the marketplace Godwin Mercado in honor of the area and its cultural diversity. Council member Sheldon DeKryger’s comments, which MLive quoted, showed some members’ worries over whether the name would be inclusive of the larger community: “I’m a little concerned about the name being Godwin, especially as we’re trying to put Wyoming on the map.” The council chose to go ahead with Godwin Mercado after community outreach and comments from over 6,000 people, with 99% of them supporting the name. However, they also agreed that more council engagement should be a part of future naming efforts.
