With a new funding to improve outreach and education, Yolo County will empower the youth and families in its community. The county received $277,619 from the Engage Empower Implement (EEI) Grant on November 4. The Sacramento Area Council of Governments’ (SACOG) funding will be used to create partnerships and programs that assist disadvantaged groups. Yolo County teams up with the Health Education Council (HEC) and RISE, Inc. to streamline these initiatives and optimize their impact.
Oscar Villegas, the District 1 Supervisor for Yolo County, has stated the county’s commitment to improving the communities surrounding West Sacramento. “We are proud to partner with the Health Education Council to support underserved communities in West Sacramento, states Oscar Villegas” . “By working directly with residents, we will address health inequities and build pathways to better outcomes for all” . The goal of this engagement is to focus resources where they may significantly impact the lives of individuals and families across a wide range of socioeconomic disparities, including urban and rural areas.
Connecting young people from rural areas to a range of activities is the responsibility of RISE, Inc. Through leadership workshops, college exploration sessions, and after-school enrichment, the goal is to empower. For Yolo’s youth, these events serve as vital stepping stones, giving them the opportunity to create their own routes with the type of assistance that has the power to change the course of their life.
HEC is also responsible for starting outreach in the underserved neighborhoods of West Sacramento. In order to hear the health problems of the community, they will make use of current networks and collaborations. According to the Yolo County website, “HEC will identify opportunities to address barriers to healthier communities through outreach sessions and key informant interviews.” HEC claims to have a wealth of local knowledge and expertise to not only listen but also take action that can help eliminate the district’s long-standing inequities.
Another important role is played by the Yolo County Office of Education’s (YCOE) College and Career Readiness team. They will provide access to essential services that support training, upskilling, and career exploration.
