Florida used to be seen as a swing state. The politics have long been split between the more liberal South and the conservative North. Yet, starting in the 2010s, Florida has gradually shifted towards being a Republican state. In both the 2016 and 2020 elections, the Republican party secured victories in the governorship and both legislative houses. Where can Democrats find the most progressive cities to live in Florida?

After Florida elected a Republican governor in 2020, it implemented numerous conservative policies. For instance, Florida’s anti-trans policies are associated with conservatives. Florida has both blue and red cities. Many liberals who support the trans movement choose to live in blue cities to avoid the frequent anti-trans rallies and campaigns.

Most Liberal Cities in Florida for 2024

Urban areas that supported the Democratic party in the 2020 US elections are often seen as more liberal. Miami

Miami is known for being a liberal city that supports pro-choice policies and is the second-largest city in Florida. There is a higher population of liberals than conservatives. In the 2020 elections, Miami residents supported the Democratic president. Nevertheless, the two parties split nearly half of the votes, with 53.31% in favor of Democrats.

Residents of Miami have consistently supported the Democratic Party since 2000, suggesting that the majority of Miami residents align with left-leaning political views. It may come as a surprise, but the Mayor of Miami has been a Republican since 2017.

St. Petersburg

St Petersburg has consistently been situated between liberalism and conservatism. Nevertheless, it is still considered one of the top cities in Florida for liberal democrats to reside. In the 2020 US elections, St Petersburg supported a Democratic candidate.

The number was nearly evenly divided, with 49.4% for Democrats and 49.2% for Republicans. In 2022, St. Petersburg elected its first black Mayor, first Hispanic City Council member, and first Democratic Socialist. Everyone is a Democrat.

Orlando

Tampa

The city has a long history of leaning towards the Democratic party, with more residents voting for Democrats than Republicans. In the 2016 US Elections, the Democratic candidate secured victory in all ten city precincts in Key West.
