Former Rep. Justin Amash (Mich.) is considering a potential Senate bid in the Republican primary in Michigan, emphasizing the importance of having a “principled, consistent constitutional conservative” in the Senate.
On Thursday, Amash announced on X, formerly Twitter, that he has formed an exploratory committee to assess the possibility of running for the Senate seat currently held by Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D), who is retiring. According to sources, there has been a growing chorus of voices urging him to enter the GOP primary.
Amash expressed his concerns about the contenders for the seat, stating that he believes they lack inspiration, seriousness, and preparation to address the main obstacle to liberty and economic prosperity. According to him, this obstacle is an overgrown and abusive government that seeks to consolidate power and suppress individualism. “The people of Michigan and our country deserve better,” said the speaker.
Three notable candidates have entered the race for the Republican nomination: former Rep. Mike Rogers, former Rep. Peter Meijer, and former Detroit Police Chief James Craig.
Rogers has received significant backing from various established figures in his bid for the candidacy, making him a frontrunner in the race. Senator Steve Daines (R-Mont.), the chair of Senate Republicans’ campaign arm, expressed his satisfaction upon learning of Rogers’ decision to enter the race.

Amash has completed a decade-long tenure in his House seat, representing Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District. However, he made the decision to not seek reelection in 2020. In a surprising turn of events, he emerged as a vocal critic of former President Trump towards the end of his time in office. Eventually, he made the decision to part ways with the party and embrace an independent stance, driven by his concerns regarding the state of the GOP.
In a historic move, he went on to officially join the Libertarian party, making him the inaugural representative from that political affiliation to hold a seat in Congress.
Meijer has been elected as the successor to Amash. In a surprising move, this individual joined the ranks of 10 House Republicans who made the decision to impeach Trump. Their vote was based on Trump’s involvement in the attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election and the infamous Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection.

Meijer has expressed his commitment to supporting the Republican nominee in 2024, including Trump, since the beginning of his campaign. Rogers and Amash have had a history marked by disagreements. In 2014, Rogers successfully raised funds for a primary challenger against Amash following their heated disagreement on national security matters. Amash successfully defended his seat against the primary challenge and secured his reelection.
According to Amash, the ideal candidate for Senate is someone who has a proven track record of challenging the bipartisan oligarchy, advocating for sound money and free speech, opposing the surveillance state and military-industrial complex, and safeguarding our rights. “The stakes are high: freedom, social cooperation, and human progress itself,” he stated.
