Police Officer Gunned Down and Car Taken While He Drove Home from Work

A police officer in Chicago was shot and killed while on his way home from work early Sunday. The Chicago police superintendent described him as a “victim of the same type of crime he was working to prevent.”

The officer who was killed was 30 years old. He was shot multiple times and his car was stolen, according to Chicago Police Department Superintendent Larry Snelling during a news conference on Sunday morning.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has identified the officer who was killed as Luis M. Huesca. The mayor described his death as a result of “an act of senseless gun violence in our city.”

“This morning, I spoke with Officer Huesca’s mother and uncle and let them know that I am fully supporting them during this extremely difficult time of loss.” Our city is feeling very sad, and we want to express our sympathy to the family of Luis, as well as his fellow officers and the community,” Johnson wrote in a post on X on Sunday.

The mayor stated that Huesca was employed in the police department’s 5th District as a member of the Priority Response Team.

Huesca was brought to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where officials declared him dead. Snelling said detectives are trying to find out if the officer was shot during a carjacking.

“At the moment, we don’t have enough information to confirm that. The shooting happened at about 2:53 a.m. on West 56th Street near South Kedzie Avenue in the Gage Park neighborhood, as stated by the police. According to the statement, when officers arrived at the scene after receiving a gunshot detection alert, they found the injured officer lying outside on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds.

Snell said that the officer, who has been with the CPD for six years, was wearing his uniform with a jacket over it when he was shot.

“Our officer was going home after finishing his shift,” Snelling said. “The officer was shot multiple times while going back home.”

The shooting occurred in the 8th Police District on the Southwest Side of the city, according to CPD.

“He was working hard to protect communities and ensure people’s safety. Unfortunately, today that officer became a victim of the very crime he was working to prevent and keep people safe from in this city,” Snelling said. “There is a high amount of violent crime in this area, and there are individuals who are both bold and cowardly in the way they commit these acts of violence against the law-abiding citizens of this city, who are simply trying to live their lives in a responsible manner.” “It needs to end.”

According to Snelling, the officer’s mother and uncle are still alive.

“He was a wonderful officer and person, and his family is going through a difficult time at the moment. I offer my sympathies to the family. “We should pray for the family, especially his mother,” Snelling said. “These crimes are senseless and taking the lives of people in our community.” Today, one of our officers.
