The Indiana State Police are asking for the public’s help in solving a 26-year-old cold case involving skeletal remains discovered in January 1998 near the Interstate 70 overpass in Vigo County. Despite numerous investigative efforts and techniques over the years, the remains remained unidentified.
In a recent breakthrough, advanced DNA technology from Othram, a company specializing in forensic genetic genealogy, enabled the Vigo County Coroner’s Office and Indiana State Police to develop a DNA profile. This led to the identification of the remains as Mitchell Preston, a 47-year-old man from Anderson, who was last seen in August 1997 traveling on foot to California.
