SAGINAW, Mich. (DDN) – A small collision on northbound I-75 became a more catastrophic event when an alleged inebriated motorist wrecked near Saginaw early Wednesday.
According to Michigan State Police, the original incident occurred around 6:45 a.m. on northbound I-75 between the I-675 and Holland Road interchanges. A trooper investigating the collision was standing outside the patrol car when it was hit.
According to investigators, an alleged inebriated motorist heading northward rammed into the rear of the patrol car, pushing it into the vehicle involved in the first incident.
The trooper suffered minor injuries while jumping out of the way. The driver of the vehicle involved in the initial collision also suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the second mishap.
They were transferred to a nearby hospital for treatment, but are believed to be well.
Authorities arrested the individual who caused the second crash on charges of driving while intoxicated. Michigan State Police did not name the driver because he had not appeared in court for arraignment.
Police halted all northbound lanes of I-75 near the Holland Road interchange to investigate and clear the scene. The incident resulted in a 5-mile traffic delay back to Bridgeport.
Around 9:30 a.m., all northbound lanes of Interstate 75 reopened in the vicinity.
