AMBRIDGE – This is a list of the top 10 things that no community wants to be associated with, and Ambridge officials say that the borough should not be included in it. A website called homesecurityshield.org released a list of the top 10 most dangerous cities in Pennsylvania. According to their ranking, Ambridge is listed as the second most dangerous city.
“It’s absurd,” said Ambridge Police Chief James Mann. “The report was published by a home security company.” I believe the study is flawed. The study considers murders, bar fights, burglaries, and rapes to be equally important.
No one returned the messages left at the phone numbers listed on the company’s website. I couldn’t find any information about ownership, the location of the home office, or Better Business Bureau accreditation through a thorough web search.

According to the list that was published on the website by 5 p.m. on Monday, Ambridge was ranked second, right after Chester in Delaware County. The rankings on the site were determined using the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report (UCR) 2012 data, which was made public in September 2013.
“According to information on the website, we consulted the most recent FBI Uniform Crime Report to find out which cities in Pennsylvania have the highest crime rates and are considered the most dangerous.” “Our rankings are determined only by the data that the FBI publicly releases each year.” A crime is a crime, so we considered both violent and property crimes… We understand that there are various ways to display this data. However, for this list, we decided to take into account not only the murder rate but also both violent and property crimes.

Community police departments, like Ambridge, provide the FBI with annual reports on the number of property and violent crimes. Mann said that officers are trained to write code for various crimes. The different types of crimes include forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, murder and non-negligent manslaughter, burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft, and arson.
The press offices for both the FBI’s Pittsburgh office and the UCR did not respond to phone calls asking for comments. However, the FBI advises against using the data on its website to create rankings.
“These rankings are not helpful in understanding the many factors that influence crime…” The site stated that as a result, these analyses are often oversimplified or incomplete, leading to misleading perceptions that can negatively impact communities and their residents. Audrey Guskey, an associate professor of marketing at Duquesne University’s Palumbo Donahue School of Business, said that is what is likely to happen.
Guskey described this kind of marketing as unethical. “They are doing this to generate fear and create excitement,” Guskey said. “But it’s a matter of ethics. Do you really want to frighten people like this and, in a way, harm the reputation of many communities?”
“It’s discouraging as a marketer when you witness something like this,” she expressed. “They are exploiting, undermining, and causing harm to communities in order to make money.” Mann is not happy about that.
“It’s a small community, and maybe they think they can cause fear and sell many home security systems,” Mann said. “We don’t care about the report here.” In my opinion, the quality of living in this place has improved threefold over the past 10 years. We make Ambridge a place where crime is not welcome and difficult to thrive.
