Biden Targets Wealthy in Pennsylvania Tour With a Hometown Visit

President Joe Biden, from the United States, begins a tour of several cities in the state of Pennsylvania. He starts in his hometown of Scranton, where he will talk about the need to raise taxes on wealthy Americans and big corporations.

Pennsylvania has 19 electoral votes, which is one of the highest counts among all 50 U.S. states. The state’s voters often switch between supporting Democrats and Republicans. In the 2024 presidential election, Pennsylvania is considered a valuable prize because it will host a rematch between President Biden and his Republican rival, former President Donald Trump.

Biden, who lived in Scranton as a child before moving to Delaware, won Pennsylvania in 2020 by a very small margin of less than 1.5%, which is about 80,000 votes. In 2016, Trump won against Hillary Clinton by less than 45,000 votes. Recent polls indicate that the race is once again very close.

Biden will go to Pittsburgh on Wednesday and Philadelphia on Thursday to highlight the differences between his tax and economic policies and those of Trump. Trump visited Eastern Pennsylvania on Saturday to hold a campaign rally that attracted a large number of supporters.

“According to Michael Tyler, the communications director for the Biden campaign, Joe Biden is a candidate who understands the world from his humble upbringing in Scranton, Pennsylvania, while Donald Trump sees the world from his luxurious country club in Mar-a-Lago,”

Biden is trying to address voter worries about the U.S. economy, even though there has been job growth, increased spending, and better-than-expected GDP growth. Many voters believe that Biden is responsible for the increasing prices of various items, such as groceries and construction supplies, as well as the high interest rates.

According to a recent poll by Reuters/Ipsos, more voters trust Trump than Biden when it comes to managing the economy and jobs. Trump has a 39% trust rating, while Biden has a 33% trust rating.

Biden believes that his economic message, which focuses on helping the working class by implementing a new tax on billionaires and closing corporate loopholes, will resonate with voters in a blue-collar area of Pennsylvania. This region used to be strongly Democratic before Trump became popular. According to the latest U.S. Census figures, Scranton is located in Lackawanna County. On average, Lackawanna County has a higher percentage of white residents, lower income levels, and lower education levels compared to the rest of the state.

Campaign aides have said that in order for Biden to remain in the White House, he needs to prevent white, non-college educated voters in Pennsylvania and other rust-belt battleground states like Michigan and Wisconsin from switching their support to other candidates.

In 2008 and 2012, Barack Obama, who used to be the President, won Lackawanna county with about 62% of the vote. However, Hillary Clinton barely won with 49.8% of the vote. Biden received 53% of the votes in the county and won. The Republican and Democratic primary contests in the state will be held on April 23.

Biden is dealing with a group of people who are criticizing him for not taking sufficient action to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The crisis has resulted in widespread disease and famine in the Palestinian area due to Israel’s air and ground campaign.

Amber Viola, a 38-year-old resident of Scranton, who hosts a well-liked local political podcast, mentioned that she was asked by the Biden campaign to go to the event in Scranton, but she declined the invitation.

“I don’t feel comfortable taking pictures for the campaign while people are dying,” Viola said. Voters in states like Michigan, Wisconsin, and North Carolina organized opposition efforts in the Democratic primaries to express their protest. Biden has been met with protests at numerous public events in the past few months.
