Continental Dairy Facilities Southwest Recalls 80,000 Pounds of Kirkland Signature Butter from Costco in Texas for Undisclosed Milk Allergen

Continental Dairy Facilities Southwest LLC has recalled around 80,000 pounds of Costco’s Kirkland Signature butter due to a missing milk allergen disclaimer on the packaging.

FOX 26 Houston

reports that the voluntary recall includes both salted and unsalted varieties, with more than 79,000 pounds of butter distributed in Texas.

The absence of the standard “Contains Milk” statement on the butter, may lead to issues for those with milk allergies, despite the ingredient list mentioning cream. The Food and Drug Administration classified the recall as Class II, suggesting that the potential for serious health consequences is remote. The FDA specified the best-by dates for the affected butter as ranging from February 23, to March 29, 2025, for the salted version and February 22 to March 23, 2025, for the unsalted batches,

reported.

Social media users have reacted with a mix of amusement and confusion over the need for an allergen disclaimer for milk, a key ingredient in butter. However, as

CW39

explains, FDA regulations require clear labeling of allergens to ensure consumer safety, with the agency’s food labeling laws specifying that nine major allergens, including milk, must be disclosed unless their common name is already listed in the ingredient list.

Carol D’Lima, food technologist with the Office of Nutrition and Food Labeling at the FDA, advised consumers in an interview covered by CW39: “It’s very important to read the entire ingredient list to see if your allergen is present. If you see its name even once, it’s back to the shelf for that food product too.”
