History of The Bellamy Mansion
Built for Dr. Bellamy and his family between 1859 and 1861, the Bellamy Mansion is an intriguing location with a rich background that is haunted by spirits from its past.
Since their house was being used as a Union Army headquarters, the family was forced to leave Wilmington in early 1865 due to the Civil War and yellow fever, and they wouldn’t return until much later in the year.
This intimidating twenty-two-room home, which was built for the Bellamy family and their ten children by enslaved and freed black carpenters and artisans, is rumored to be haunted by a number of spirits, including those of former servants and numerous Bellamy family members who lived and passed away there over the years.
The Bellamy family had 10 children, but only a small number of them had children of their own. Eliza and Ellen never married and remained in the house until their deaths.
Ellen Bellamy, who survived until 1946, was the Bellamy child who stayed in the house the longest. Particularly in her later years when she was hampered by poor health, Ellen would spend the most of her time in the southwest bedroom.
Her spirit is reported to wander throughout this room and the entire floor. According to one report, Ellen is a voracious reader who enjoys reading the newspaper every night before bed.
