Haunted Illinois Top Destinations for Paranormal Enthusiasts

Illinois offers a spine-tingling combination of haunted stories and frightening sites thanks to its rich history and varied environment.

This Midwestern state is a gold mine for paranormal fans hoping to experience the paranormal, with everything from historic hotels to abandoned asylums.

Come along as we investigate some of Illinois’ most haunted locations, where locals claim that there is little difference between the living and the dead.

Greenwood Cemetery

The Greenwood Bride, a spectral woman who weeps, and other ghosts of Confederate soldiers can be found in this sizable and extremely active haunted cemetery.

After contracting yellow fever while serving as prisoners during the Civil War, the soldiers were interred in unmarked graves.

It is understood that the troops will confront those visiting the graveyard. Ghost lights have been spotted around the cemetery’s southern edge, suggesting that there are more ghosts here as well.

Congress Plaza Hotel

This hotel is among those that is so old and steeped in history that there are almost as many ghost stories as there are rooms in it.

The Al Capone story, on the other hand, is untrue; he never resided there and he most likely did not pass away there, despite reports that see him waking the hallways.

Apparently, room 441 is the best option if you’re seeking for a haunted room experience. Many visitors have mentioned seeing a shadowy woman in their room.

Papa Vito’s Restaurant

The present restaurant is housed in a mid-nineteenth-century historic residence.

A mother and her small kid, a ghostly headmistress who had taught at a neighboring schoolhouse, and a ghostly stagecoach driver known only as “Charlie” are the four creatures said to haunt the structure.

Massock Mausoleum

The Lithuanian Liberty Cemetery is a tiny cemetery where the Massock Mausoleum is located, and it is the stuff of tales. The mausoleum entrance is supposed to stay warm and has been locked shut since vandals stole a skull from it in the 1960s.

Locals also claim to have seen a terrifying ghost known as Hatchet Man lurking around the cemetery. Rosemary Ellen Guiley describes seeing a tiny, pale apparition here at night in her book The Complete Vampire Companion.

The book claims that a reporter, upon learning of the sightings, filled the mausoleum’s vent with holy water; as a result, the tomb began to groan uncannily. Police are reportedly keeping a close eye on the area.

Schweppe Mansion

In 1917, Mr. and Mrs. John G. Shedd gave their daughter Laura Schweppe Mansion as a wedding present for her and her new spouse, Charles Schweppe. In 1941, tragedy struck when Charles shot himself and was discovered dead in his bedroom.

He had a letter saying, “I’ve been awake all night,” on his dresser. It is awful. The suicide’s entire motivation remains a mystery. Laura passed away, and the mansion remained unoccupied for 46 years. Almost empty, that is. There are rumors that the spirits of multiple servants, including Charles and Laura, still reside here.

The mansion was bought, renovated, and occupied by private owners in 1987. According to reports, it was recently downsized from $18 million to $15 million on the sale list.
