Method to Determine The Poorest Places In Texas for 2024

When most people think about identifying the poorest places, the first thing that usually comes to mind is looking at the poverty rate. That means the number of people who have an income below a certain level set by the government for a household of a specific size.

However, we believe that one statistic alone does not fully capture the essence of being one of the “poorest places”. We used Saturday Night Science to examine a set of criteria from the recently published 2018-2022 American Community Survey.

  • Poverty Level
  • Median Household Income

Once we gathered data for all 360 locations in Texas with populations exceeding 5,000 people, we assigned a ranking from 1 to 360 for each location based on specific criteria. A ranking of 1 indicates the lowest performance in each category.

We calculated the average rankings for each place and assigned a “Poor Score” to them. The place with the lowest overall Poor Score, Prairie View, was named the “Poorest Place In Texas For 2024”. This report has been updated for the year 2024. It is the tenth time we have ranked the poorest places in Texas.
