GRETNA, Lou. (DDN) – Two individuals lost their lives in a high-speed collision in Gretna on Saturday night.
The crash occurred at approximately 6:40 p.m. in the 700 block of Fourth Street, according to Gretna Police Department.
Police report that Stephan Juarez, 33, was driving at high speed east on Fourth Street when he veered across the center line and collided with multiple vehicles, one of which had passengers onboard.
Juarez kept driving east on the westbound side of Fourth Street. He subsequently exited the travel lanes and collided head-on with a correctly parked Volvo. A passenger was sitting in the rear seat on the passenger side of the Volvo.
The front-seat passenger had already gotten out of the car and was standing next to it when the collision occurred. The Volvo driver was outside the vehicle and was not struck.

It has been confirmed that Hubert Gauthreaux Sr. and Victoria Gauthreaux, the grandparents of Hubert Gauthreaux, were inside the Volvo during the incident. Hubert Gauthreaux is one of the victims of the Bourbon Street attack that occurred on January 1.

Gretna EMS took them to University Hospital.
Hubert Gauthreaux Sr. and Victoria Gauthreaux both passed away due to their injuries.
Juarez was taken to Ochsner Hospital Westbank with minor injuries and was arrested after being released from the hospital.
He faces charges for two counts of vehicular homicide, reckless operation, a second DWI offense, driving with a suspended license, not wearing a seat belt, and possession of marijuana.
A prayer vigil took place in Gretna at the crash site at 4 p.m.

The city of Gretna released a statement regarding the passing of Hubert Sr. and Victoria Gauthreaux:
“Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the tragic loss of Hubert Sr. and Victoria Gauthreaux, who were taken from us in Saturday night’s devastating crash in downtown Gretna. This heartbreaking loss is made even more painful as they were the grandparents of 21-year-old Hubert Gauthreaux III, a victim of the Bourbon Street terror attack—one tragedy compounded by another.”
“In times like these, we must come together to support their loved ones as they navigate this unimaginable grief. Our entire Gretna community stands with the Gauthreaux family. Please keep their loved ones in your thoughts and prayers. May Hubert Sr. and Victoria rest in peace,” the statement also added.
