Is Harlem Safe to Walk Alone?

Overall, Harlem is not any more unsafe than numerous other areas in New York City.

To ensure your safety in Harlem, it’s important to stay alert and aware of your surroundings. Stick to well-lit, high-traffic areas near popular attractions for tourists. Consider traveling in a group or with a knowledgeable guide to avoid wandering into unsafe areas.
Avoid parks, especially after dark (including the northern part of Central Park), as they tend to attract vagrants and a criminal element. Avoiding the subway and opting for Uber or Yellow Cab might be a better choice to prevent getting lost if you’re unfamiliar with the area. Just make sure to take the same safety measures as you would in any busy city area, and you’ll be okay.
