Police said they arrested a man on Tuesday who is accused of assaulting random women in New York City. Police said that Daquan Armstead, a 31-year-old man from East Bronx, was arrested for allegedly committing hate-motivated assaults on seven women in Lower Manhattan. The assaults took place between late March and mid-April.
Authorities claim that he hit women, occasionally in the face, on their heads, or on their backs. When Armstead was asked about the allegations while being taken out of the New York Police Department’s Hate Crimes Task Force office, he said, “They spit at me.” The police denied the suspect’s statement that the victims had spit on him.
It was unclear on Tuesday evening whether he has hired a lawyer. New York County Defender Services provides defense attorneys for criminal cases. They mentioned that there is no public record of his arrest available.
Armstead was arrested by the NYPD’s Office of the Deputy Commissioner for Public Information. He is suspected of committing a hate crime, assault, attempted hate crime, and aggravated harassment. According to the police, there have been 95 attacks in Manhattan this year, where 50 of the victims were women and the attacks were unprovoked.
Previously, someone was arrested in connection with a series of attacks that happened earlier this spring. These attacks gained attention after some of the women shared their stories on TikTok. The allegations involving Armstead do not seem to be the same as the attacks seen on social media.
