Men in The Region Sentenced to Prison and Probation for Sexual Offenses

NILES — Two guys from the area were given jail time and probation on Monday in Berrien County Trial Court for crimes related to sex.

Schanick

Gregory Vaughn Schanick, 32, of Buchanan, admitted to having sexually abusive materials and was given a sentence of 45 days in jail, five years of probation, having to file as a sex offender, and $658 in fines and costs. He can’t be near a school or park for more than 1,000 feet or touch anyone younger than 17 years old.

On October 11, 2023, in Buchanan, his phone contained pictures and movies of children that were not appropriate for children.

Attorney Peter Johnson said this is Schanick’s first time being charged with a crime. Schanick said he didn’t do anything to find the pictures on his phone and didn’t even know he had them.

Judge Smith said, “I’m not sure if I believe that.” “On your phone, you had 100 pictures and videos.” If you didn’t know what the stuff was, I don’t see why you posted it. I don’t think you found them by accident on your phone.

“Accepting what you did is the first step,” she said. You told the cops what they would find and where the pictures were hidden. Stop telling yourself lies; it doesn’t help. This is against the law, and these pictures are made because people want them. According to leaderpub

Schultz

Thaddeus David Schultz, 40, of Michigan City, Indiana, admitted to approaching a child for sexual reasons and was given five years of probation, 45 days in jail with credit for one day served, having to file as a sex offender, and $658 in fines and costs.

The event took place in Niles on March 3. He set up a meeting with a child underage, but it turned out to be a police ruse.

Schultz apologized to the judge and the people of Niles. “I’m fully responsible for what I did,” he said. I’ve been trying to get my mind back on track because it wasn’t in a good place.” That’s what I want to do. I want to follow the rules. I’ve really learned my lesson.

Judge Smith said, “I want to make sure you know why this law exists.” “I think you didn’t just want to hang out and talk. I don’t know what your plans were.” There was sexual content in your conversation with the fake. The first step in getting better is to remember what you had planned to do that day.

In a different case, Jeremy Ray Hossa, 49, of Niles, pleaded guilty to three counts of methamphetamine possession, gun possession by a felon, and possession of methamphetamines. He was sentenced to three concurrent terms of 90 days in jail, with credit for two days served, firearms forfeiture, and $394 in fines and costs.

The event took place in Niles on May 18, 2021. Hossa got a federal sentence for having drugs in 2011 and hasn’t been charged with anything else since 2021. Hossa said he didn’t know that there were arrest warrants out for him.
