Multi-vehicle Crash Causes Fire and Road Hazard on Route 283 West, Lane Closures Last for Hours

DDN – PennDOT reported that Route 283 West in East Hempfield Township was closed Wednesday afternoon due to a multi-vehicle incident.

Just after 3:30 p.m., Lancaster County-Wide Communications reported a vehicle accident involving a tractor-trailer and two passenger vehicles on Route 283 in the westbound lanes near the Landisville exit.

According to first responders, one vehicle caught fire at the scene.

According to dispatchers, the fire was doused and one victim was sent to the hospital.

PennDOT crews responded to treat the road after the water used to extinguish the vehicle fire caused ice to form.

Firefighters closed lanes on Route 283 for more than three hours to remove debris and salted the road. PennDOT stated that all lanes were reopened by 7 p.m.
