Method to determine the whitest places in Washington

We used Saturday Night Science to analyze Census demographic data and determine the whitest places in Washington.

We needed to examine the number of white people living in each city in Washington based on the population of each city. This refers to the proportion of white people residing in each city in Washington.

We examined table B03002, which provides information on Hispanic or Latino origin by race. These are the names of the categories defined by the Census:

  • Hispanic or Latino
  • White alone*
  • Black or African American alone*
  • American Indian and Alaska Native alone*
  • Asian alone*
  • Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone*
  • Some other race alone*
  • Two or more races*

The specific column we are focusing on is the number of individuals who identified themselves as White alone. We only analyzed towns with a population of more than 6,000 people. We were left with 115 cities.

Next, we determined the proportion of residents who identify as White. The percentages range from 90.6% to 5.9%.

Finally, we determined the ranking of each city based on the percentage of White population. A higher score indicates a higher percentage of White population, while a lower score indicates a lower percentage. Liberty Lake was found to have the highest percentage of White residents, while Toppenish had the lowest percentage of White residents.

This article has been revised for the year 2024. This report is our tenth ranking of the whitest cities in Washington.
