Rapid City Law Enforcement Explains How to Dispose of Unwanted Medication

On Saturday, April 27, police enforcement across, including the Rapid City Police Department, will participate in the biennial Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

The public can safely dispose of expired or no longer needed medicines to avoid landfills and drains. But most crucially, it removes harmful narcotics from easy access.

Dr. Brendan Matthews, RCPD evidence section forensic laboratory director, said, “We have a countrywide opioid issue, with many overdoses and deaths. This is a tremendous opportunity to remove hazardous narcotics like opioids from the public. This is a terrific technique to safely dispose of stuff and possibly prevent addictions and overdoses.”

Pennington County Public Safety Building will host Take Back Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sharps, syringes, and illegal narcotics are prohibited. Keep liquids like cough syrup in their containers. The cap must be sealed to avoid leaks. If lithium batteries are removed, vaping devices and cartridges are accepted.

All prescription pills collected by each county will be incarcerated safely.

Beyond Saturday’s Take Back Day, nearly 17,000 pharmacies, hospitals, and enterprises nationwide offer safe medicine disposal. Many police departments have year-round drop boxes. Click here to discover the nearest one.
