This California City Becomes the Most Obese County in Entire State

The problem of obesity in the United States is a significant health issue, and it is becoming more severe. According to estimates from Harvard researchers published in December 2019 in the New England Journal of Medicine, it is predicted that almost half of American adults will be obese, not just overweight, by 2030. The country is dealing with a serious problem of obesity, but it is even worse in specific areas of the U.S.

The county with the highest obesity rate in California is Colusa, which has a population of 21,454. Approximately 39.0% of adults living in this area are obese, while the obesity rate for the entire state is 24.3%.

Some populations are more likely to report higher obesity rates due to various social and economic factors. Obesity can lead to serious health problems like diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers. When a lot of people in a population are obese, it can really hurt their health and how long they live. In Colusa County, 24.2% of the people say they are in poor or fair health, and 15.5% have been told they have diabetes. The percentages for the entire state are 17.6% and 8.8%, respectively.

Health experts have identified several lifestyle factors that are likely causing the weight problem among Americans, including a lack of physical activity. Approximately 26.2% of adults in Colusa County do not exercise regularly, while the percentage is 17.7% for the entire state of California.

Counties with high rates of adult obesity often have low-income populations. People who earn less money have a harder time affording the healthcare they need and living a healthy lifestyle. This includes being able to eat healthy food and having convenient access to gyms and other places to exercise. The median annual household income in Colusa County is $59,401 per year. This is $15,834 less than the median income in California, which is $75,235 per year.
