This Small Florida Town Becomes 3rd Most Dangerous in State

Florida is famous for its sunny beaches, theme parks, and diverse culture. However, some areas of the state may not be as tranquil and secure as they appear. Recently, a small town in Florida has been ranked as the third most dangerous place in the state in a new report.

Discovering Opa-locka

Opa-locka is a town with a population of around 16,000 residents, situated in Miami-Dade County, approximately 10 miles north of Miami. Glenn Curtiss, an aviation pioneer, established the town in 1926. He incorporated a Moorish theme into the design, drawing inspiration from the tales of One Thousand and One Nights. The town boasts several unique buildings, like the City Hall designed to look like a giant mosque, and the Opa-locka Airport, known as the largest seaplane base globally.

Despite its exotic appearance, Opa-locka has long struggled with crime, corruption, and poverty. This town has one of the highest poverty rates in the state, where over 40% of its residents live below the federal poverty line. In addition to that, the town has a track record of political scandals, like the 2016 FBI raid that uncovered a large-scale bribery scheme including the mayor and other officials.

Crime on the Increase

The most recent report from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement shows that Opa-locka had 1,026 crimes in 2023, resulting in a crime rate of 6,410 per 100,000 individuals. Opa-locka is ranked as the third most dangerous place in Florida, following Florida City and Lake City. The report indicates that in 2023, Opa-locka had 11 murders, 25 rapes, 137 robberies, 247 aggravated assaults, 232 burglaries, 346 larcenies, and 28 motor vehicle thefts.

Several factors have likely led to the increase in crime in Opa-locka, including limited economic opportunities, low educational achievement, drug trafficking, gang involvement, and insufficient law enforcement. The town’s labor force is experiencing a high unemployment rate, with over 20% currently without work. The town’s educational level is low, as only 64% of its residents have a high school diploma or higher. The town is known for drug trafficking, particularly involving cocaine and heroin, leading to increased violence and addiction. Several gangs, including the Opa-locka Goons, Zoe Pound, and the Bloods, are active in the town, engaging in turf wars and shootings. The town faces a challenge due to limited police resources, as there are only 54 officers to serve the entire population.

Striving for Improvement

Even with the challenging circumstances, certain individuals in Opa-locka are working to enhance the town and lower crime rates. Here are some of the initiatives that have been implemented or suggested:

  • Establishing a community policing unit to foster trust and collaboration between law enforcement and residents, while also tackling underlying issues like poverty, unemployment, and education.
  • Introducing a crime prevention program that includes setting up cameras, lighting, and fencing in high-crime areas, along with offering incentives for businesses and homeowners to enhance their properties and security.
  • Creating a youth mentoring program that matches at-risk youth with positive role models like teachers, coaches, and professionals, providing academic support, career guidance, and life skills.
  • Creating a plan to revitalize the town’s culture and economy by restoring its heritage, architecture, and arts to attract investments, businesses, and tourists.
