The use of cannabis, commonly referred to as weed, has been a subject of discussion and debate throughout the United States. It is important to note that, despite these changes, the use of weed for both recreational and medical purposes is still illegal in South Carolina.

The Cannabis Industry in the United States

The U.S. legal cannabis industry faced difficulties in 2022, but it is expected to bounce back and achieve an estimated annual revenue of $31.8 billion by the end of 2023. Furthermore, it is projected to grow even further, reaching $50.7 billion by 2028. The market’s growth is being driven by the increasing legalization of cannabis and the growing acceptance of its medical use.

During the first two months of 2023, three states began selling cannabis. Connecticut and Maryland started selling it for recreational use, while Mississippi began selling it for medical purposes. In spite of this growth, the industry encounters notable challenges, mainly because of federal illegality, which increases the operating costs for cannabis companies.
