The US government has taken away some licenses that allowed American chip makers to sell certain products to the Chinese technology company Huawei.
The Department of Commerce did not say which permits were cancelled, but this happened after Huawei released a computer with artificial intelligence capabilities that uses a chip made by Intel.
Intel, a chip maker based in the US, chose not to respond to a request for comment from BBC News. The BBC has also reached out to Huawei and chip giant Qualcomm to get their responses to the announcement.
Since 2019, the United States has limited the export of technology, like computer chips, to Huawei. This is because they believe Huawei has connections to the Chinese military.
“We have revoked certain licenses for exports to Huawei,” the Commerce Department stated in a statement on Tuesday. However, the department did not provide any specifics regarding the permits that were revoked.
Following the debut of Huawei’s MateBook X Pro laptop from the previous month, a number of senators in the United States voiced their disapproval of the administration of President Joe Biden.
