We used Saturday Night Science to analyze the latest FBI crime data and find out which cities in Vermont are the most dangerous.

We looked at the rates of violent and property crimes for every location with more than 5,000 people. We studied a total of 23 cities in Vermont. These are the findings from our analysis:

  • According to the latest FBI crime data, Brattleboro is considered the most dangerous city in Vermont.
  • In Vermont, there are 489 violent crimes per 100,000 people.
  • In Vermont, there are 6,094 property crimes for every 100,000 people.
  • Barre Town is considered the safest city in Vermont.

There are other rocky things in Vermont besides Ben & Jerry’s Rocky Road. The state has many dangerous places to live that are filled with rocky situations. Many people in Vermont believe that their small area of the state is safe, but unfortunately, this is not true for those residing in the most dangerous areas of Vermont.

We used Saturday Night Science to determine the most dangerous cities in Vermont. We examined data from the FBI’s most recent crime report to compare the rates of violent and property crimes in 23 cities. We focused on cities with a population of over 5,000 residents.

Method to Find the Most Dangerous Cities in Vermont

The FBI releases two crime datasets on cities in Vermont every year. First, there will be a dataset that includes only the largest cities in Vermont. Then, at the end of the year, a more detailed release of the dataset will be available.

We analyzed the data from the 2022 Crime In The United States Report for Vermont. What criteria did we use? Take a look:

  • Violent Crimes Per Capita
  • Property Crimes Per Capita

To ensure a fair comparison, we only looked at cities in Vermont with a population of over 5,000. We were left with 23 cities in Vermont. We ranked each city from 1 to 23 based on two criteria. A #1 ranking indicates that the city is the most dangerous for that specific criteria. Afterwards, we combined the two rankings to create a single “Dangerous Index”.

Finally, we have ranked every city in Vermont based on the “Dangerous Index”. The city with the lowest index, Brattleboro, is considered the most dangerous. If there were any ties, they were given to the smaller city.
