Wrong-Way Driver With a Gun and a Temper: Minnesota Man Convicted in Road Rage Murder

MINNEAPOLIS, MN – It’s perhaps the most terrifying scenario a driver can face: a hothead with a gun and a temper shorter than a corgi. What started as a simple traffic dispute on a narrow Minneapolis street has now led to a murder conviction. A jury found Dhaha Hassan, 25, guilty of second-degree murder without intent, along with illegal possession of a firearm without a serial number. Hassan’s sentencing is scheduled for November 5, 2024, at 9 a.m.

An Escalating Confrontation

The incident took place on November 18, 2023, when Hassan was driving in the wrong direction on a narrow street, blocking traffic. A minivan tried to pass him, but the effort to clear the road soon turned confrontational.

Randy John Burris, a 34-year-old passenger in the minivan, got out of the vehicle to ask Hassan to reverse. Witnesses reported that Hassan refused, taunting Burris by saying, “What are you going to do about it?” Burris, appearing uneasy, called on another passenger to join him. The situation escalated quickly from words to tension.

Tragic Moment Unfolds

As the argument grew heated, Hassan attempted to get out of his car. Burris reacted by pushing the car door closed, preventing him from exiting. At that point, Hassan drew a firearm and shot Burris four times.

When police arrived at the scene, Burris was found on the ground, suffering from gunshot wounds to his chest and stomach. Despite his severe injuries, Burris managed to point officers toward Hassan as the shooter. Burris was taken to Hennepin Healthcare, where he later died from his wounds.

Hassan’s Arrest and Claims

Hassan was arrested at the scene and, according to officers, appeared to be under the influence of marijuana. During his interrogation, Hassan admitted to shooting Burris but claimed that he felt threatened by the actions of those in the minivan.

Hassan said the minivan had been following him closely, with its high beams on, and insisted that Burris had acted aggressively toward him. Hassan also stated he had begun to reverse his car before the confrontation turned deadly.

Sentencing Awaits

With the conviction now secured, Hassan faces sentencing on November 5. The judge’s decision will determine how long Hassan will serve for the tragic outcome of what began as a seemingly minor altercation.

As the legal process nears its conclusion, the memory of Randy John Burris lives on with his family and friends. Those closest to him remember a kind soul whose life was cut tragically short. In the face of this unimaginable loss, they hold onto cherished moments, hoping that justice brings some measure of peace and healing.
