2024 Study Disclose the Gayest States In The US

The states with the highest LGBTQ+ population in the US for 2024, according to Saturday Night Science, are Oregon and Delaware. Summary of research on the most LGBTQ+ friendly states in the United States. We used Saturday Night Science to study the states that have the highest proportion of LGBT adults in 2024. The data is sourced from the UCLA School of Law Williams Institute. They provide information on the percentage of gay adults in each state. The most recent data is from December 2023.

  • Oregon has the highest rate of LGBT adults in the United States. Approximately 7.8% of adults in Oregon identify as gay.
  • Mississippi has the lowest rate of LGBT adults in the United States. Approximately 4.1% of adults in Mississippi identify as gay.

We have previously examined the cities with the highest LGBTQ+ populations in America, and it is not surprising that San Francisco ranked as the city with the highest LGBTQ+ population. The Census in San Francisco found that only about 2% of households identified as gay, which was lower than expected.

If the city with the highest concentration of gay people in the country has a relatively small gay population, then how small must the overall gay population be across America? According to the Census, only about 0.5% of households consist of two males or two females.

The current percentage of Nevada’s population that identifies as gay is 6.6%. Many people might assume that Las Vegas has the highest number of gay Americans in Nevada. However, Reno and Las Vegas have a similar percentage of gay residents. However, it could be argued that Las Vegas has a higher number of gay people within its city limits at any given time.

This would make Massachusetts the 16th state in the United States to have such a ban.

Method to Calculate the Gayest States In The United States

We have been ranking cities for nearly ten years now, and we always begin our search for data in the same way – by exploring the American Community Survey along with Saturday Night Science.

Regrettably, the ACS no longer provides information on same-sex households as of 2020. As a result, we have started using a different data source called the UCLA School of Law Williams Institute. This source provides data on the percentage of gay adults by state. The most recent data is from December 2023.

We organized the states based on the percentage of adults who identify as gay, from highest to lowest. Which state in America has the highest population of LGBTQ+ individuals? Oregon ended up being the state with the most pride.
