President Joe Biden visited his childhood home in Scranton, a working-class city in Pennsylvania. He started a three-day campaign in the state by advocating for higher taxes on wealthy individuals and portraying Donald Trump as someone who is disconnected from the concerns of ordinary people.
The Democratic president seemed to enjoy reminiscing about the past, while also trying to counter the popular appeal of his Republican predecessor’s campaign. He stayed at his childhood home for a longer time than he had planned. There was an American flag gently waving on the front porch, and neighbors were gathered on the sidewalk under blooming trees and a light blue sky. The president later took pictures with children, some of whom were wearing school uniforms, in the backyard.
Biden wants to make progress in an important state where the election is closely contested, while Trump will be spending most of the week in a courtroom in New York City for his first criminal trial. Biden is going to Pittsburgh on Wednesday and Philadelphia on Thursday, but he began his travels in Scranton, which has always been an important part of his political story.
On Tuesday, in a city with a population of 75,000, Biden tried to change the way people think about the economy. Many Americans are unhappy with their financial situations because of high inflation and interest rates, even though unemployment is low.

The president stated that he wants to make the tax code more fair, so that Americans can keep more of their money. He also criticized Trump, who is a billionaire himself, for being influenced by wealthy interests.
“When I consider the economy, I don’t view it from the perspective of Mar-a-Lago.” Biden said he sees things from the perspective of Scranton, his hometown, and compared it to the Florida estate where Trump lives. Biden wants billionaires to pay a minimum tax rate of 25%. He explained that taxes are a way for us to invest in the country.
“Scranton values or Mar-a-Lago values,” Biden said. “These are the different ideas for our economy that make us question what is fair in this campaign.” He gave a speech at a community center. The stage had a banner on each side that said “Tax Fairness for All Americans.”
The president stated that the Republicans’ policies of cutting taxes for the wealthy in order to boost the economy have not been successful for America, and he believes that Donald Trump represents that failure. He criticized Trump’s background, saying that it only taught him that “the best way to get rich is to inherit it.” He also pointed out the significant decrease in the market value of Trump’s social media platform, Truth Social.
“If the value of Trump’s company, Truth Social, continues to decrease, he might benefit more from my tax plan than his own,” Biden joked. Michael Whatley, who is the chair of the Republican National Committee, criticized Biden for the issue of inflation in a statement regarding his trip. “It’s not surprising that Pennsylvanians will vote to make America affordable again and elect President Trump in November,” he said.
In his speech, Biden strongly criticized Trump for allegedly referring to veterans who died in combat as “suckers and losers”. He said the comments, which Trump has denied, were “disqualifying,” and added, “I’m glad I wasn’t standing next to him.”
Later in the day, Biden spoke at a training session for grassroots organizers at a union hall. He told the attendees, “We need to win.” It comes down to traditional politics. It comes down to going door-to-door.
During the various stops, there were songs of praise for Biden’s connection to this town. Crowds lined the streets and cheered as his motorcade passed by. There were not many Trump flags, and only a few protests against Biden’s support for Israel’s military operations in Gaza.
