We used Saturday Night Science to study the cities in South Dakota that have the highest percentage of households with same-sex couples in 2024. The information is sourced from the American Community Survey 2013-2018 vintage. This survey provides details on gender and household status. Unfortunately, the Census no longer provides information at the city level. Therefore, this report is based on the most up-to-date data available.

Way to determine the best cities for same-sex households in South Dakota
We used Saturday Night Science and the 2013-2018 American Community Survey from the U.S. Census to determine the ranking of the most LGBTQ+ friendly cities in South Dakota. We examined:
- Percentage of all households that are unmarried, same sex partners
We only analyzed non-CDPs that have more than 1,000 households.
We assigned a ranking from 1 to 33 to each place based on the percentage of unmarried, same-sex partner households. The city with the highest percentage of these households is considered the most gay.
In the end, it turned out to be the place with the highest percentage of gay households, at 4.74%.
