One of the most common ways to punish thieves around the world is to put them in prison. There are different types of jails in almost every country. Criminals who break the law lose their freedom in these jails.
Even though going to prison isn’t meant to be a vacation, people who do go through it have different experiences based on the facilities, conditions, and punishments in each prison.

Tent City Jail, Phoenix, Arizona
Tent City Jail in Phoenix, Arizona, is one of the strangest jails in the US. Sheriff Joe Arpaio opened it in 1993. Idaho Correctional Center, Kuna, Idaho
Idaho Correctional Center in Kuna has been called a gladiator school because of the fights between gangs there. A lawsuit from the ACLU of Idaho in 2010 says that the wardens actively promote fighting among the prisoners, even though their job is to protect them and stop violence. The case forced the prison to hire more people and give them more training, but two years later, they still hadn’t done what they were supposed to.
United States Penitentiary Marion, Marion, Illinois
When the United States Penitentiary Marion opened in 1963, it was already the country’s most secure jail. It is one of only two places in the country with a Communication Management Unit, and the building has been locked down for a long time because of violent incidents. Pete Rose and John Gotti are two of the most well-known people who are locked up here.
Julia Tutwiler Prison, Wetumpka, Alabama
Julia Tutwiler Prison in Alabama is one of the worst jails in the United States, even though it is only 400 people strong. It is a maximum-security jail with a death row for women who are facing the death penalty. Even though they all admitted guilt, only two of them did time.
Rikers Island, New York City, New York
Rikers Island in New York City is one of the biggest jails in the United States. It can hold up to 15,000 prisoners, but only about 10,000 are there right now. And there are ten different jails on the island. It has one of the highest rates of solitary confinement in the country.
This island jail has a lot of problems, such as crime, drugs, rape, and bad treatment of staff. Because this jail has so many problems, it’s easy to think that it’s a high-security prison with some of the worst criminals in the country locked up there. However, that is not the case. It mostly holds people who are waiting for their trials and nonviolent criminals with short sentences.
