Massachusetts Advocates Push For $22.6M Tax Credit Expansion

Wavelengths’ report states that Haverhill Representative Andy X. Vargas and other immigrant supporters advocated for the expansion of a tax credit. This credit is designed to help reduce poverty and improve education for families with low incomes. Currently, approximately 21,000 to 26,000 households are unable to receive this credit due to their immigration status. According to the Healthy Families Tax Credits Coalition, the expansion could benefit them.

During a meeting with the legislative Black and Latino Caucus, supporters expressed their desire for this change to be included in the 2025 budget. Representative Vargas, who is part of the caucus, emphasized the importance of fairness. He said that all individuals who pay taxes should receive equal treatment. Immigrant workers contribute taxes, but many are unable to claim this credit due to not having a Social Security number. The expansion could benefit families with different immigration statuses and make things more equitable for them.

Supporters argue that despite the cost of $22.6 million to $28 million, expanding the Earned Income Tax Credit is worth it. They think that the potential impact is much greater than the cost. According to Charlotte Bruce, a researcher at Children’s Health Watch, she believes that lawmakers can figure out a solution to make it work. According to her, it’s about addressing a major injustice with a small sum of money.
