We used Saturday Night Science to find out which cities in West Virginia have the highest levels of alcohol consumption.
West Virginia, as a whole, drinks the second least amount of alcohol in the entire country. On average, each person drinks about 18 beers. The people in West Virginia drink less alcohol than only Utah. However, we are about to discover the places that more than compensate for the slow sippers in the Mountain State.
But for those of you who are not currently in Elkins, West Virginia and experiencing double vision, let’s talk about what factors contribute to one place being considered “drunker” than another.
First of all, let’s talk about the places where you can buy alcohol. Being an important factor in actually becoming intoxicated. Then, the number of people who actually go around saying things like “Dude I was so drunk last night,” or “How did I wake up in my neighbor’s attic again?!”
And of course, talking about common beliefs, the rate at which marriages end in divorce. Research has found that when either one or both partners consume excessive amounts of alcohol, the likelihood of divorce increases by three times. By the way, West Virginia has the 9th highest divorce rate in the country
What Drunken Criteria did We Use?
First, we created a list of the most populated places in West Virginia based on the 2013 American Community Survey. Next, we examined each of these 33 places based on these criteria related to alcohol:
- Number of bars and pubs per capita
- Number of wineries per capita
- Number of liquor stores per capita
- Each city’s drunk related tweets within the last week
- Each city’s divorce rate
After collecting our information, we assigned scores from one to 33 in each category to rank each place. We calculated an overall score for each place by averaging their rankings. The places with the lowest scores were considered the drunkest.
