Georgia has been experiencing continuous population growth for a long time. This includes a trend of more people moving to Georgia than leaving it. However, many people do decide to leave the state of Georgia in large numbers. The Census Bureau publishes data every year that tells us where people are moving to.
The states where most Georgia residents move to are not surprising when looking at the actual numbers. The Peach State is bordered by Florida, North Carolina, Alabama, and South Carolina, all of which are among the top states. States with large populations, such as Texas, New York, and California, usually have high rankings.
What’s even more interesting is the net migration pattern. It reveals that in 2022, Georgia sent 3,000 more people to Kentucky than the number of people who came here. Georgia has more people moving in than moving out with most states. However, Georgia tends to have more people leaving for conservative states, resulting in a net negative migration pattern. These states are included: Kentucky, Alabama, South Carolina, and South Dakota.
Below is a map that shows the numbers of residents leaving each state. The numbers are listed in two ways: first, by the total number of leaving residents, and second, in alphabetical order by state. And at the bottom, we will include a list that shows where Georgia has the highest number of people leaving.
