The cities of Glenrock and Green River in Wyoming have been identified as the most miserable cities for 2023, according to a report from Saturday Night Science.

Do you live in one of the least happy places in Wyoming? Only 33% of people in Wyoming say they are truly happy. That’s unfortunate, especially since people in Wyoming generally have a relatively good situation overall.

However, we were wondering which cities in Wyoming might be the most unhappy. We are going to discover the answer by using Saturday Night Science and data.

Method to Find the Most Miserable Cities In The Equality State

In order to determine the unhappiest places in Wyoming, we needed to identify the factors that contribute to people’s happiness. It’s not hard to imagine that people who are happy tend to earn good salaries, have less stress, and enjoy a stable home life.

We looked at the American Community Survey 2017-2021 report from the Census to find out about happiness. Then we used Saturday Night Science to rearrange the list and get the answer.

Here are the criteria we used to measure misery:

  • Percentage of residents with a college degree
  • Average commute times
  • Unemployment rates
  • Cost of living
  • % of married couples
  • % of families with kids
  • Poverty rate

Once we determined the criteria, we collected data for the 31 towns in Wyoming that have a population of over 2,000 people. We assigned a ranking from one to 31 for each of the seven criteria, with a score of one indicating the most miserable place. In case of ties, the larger place was given priority.

Afterwards, we calculated the average of the seven rankings to create a Miserable Index for each place. The place with the lowest overall Miserable Index was given the title “Most Miserable City In Wyoming.”


A report from Saturday Night Science has identified Glenrock and Green River as the most miserable cities in Wyoming for 2023. The cities have a high poverty level, median home price, and low income. The report used data from the American Community Survey 2017-2021 to determine the most miserable places, ranking them based on factors such as college degrees, commute times, unemployment rates, cost of living, married couples, families with kids, and poverty rates.
