We used Saturday Night Science to compare the FBI crime data on murders in South Dakota. We focused on the 6 cities in the state with over 12,000 residents to find out which ones had the most murders and the highest murder rates per capita.

Method to calculate the murder capitals of South Dakota
While there are surveys and public polls on which cities in a state are the most dangerous, we wanted to depend on data rather than guesswork and opinion. Instead, we used Saturday Night Science to examine the hard data from the FBI’s previous year of reporting. We specifically examined the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report, which summarizes the number of homicides in each city on a yearly basis.
We only looked at South Dakota cities where FBI data was available for the most recent FBI Crime In The United States. This left us with six cities to rank.
We used the number of murders per capita as the ranking element. Spearfish has the highest murder rate per capita, according to the most recent data available. This is the tenth time we’ve ranked the South Dakota cities with the highest murder rates. We have updated the list for 2024.
